Why You’re Not Finishing Your Music

Getting Stuck in a Loop

A lot of us create, get stuck in these four bar loops, and never move forward.

We come up with a really good idea, and we fully develop that idea, but that idea is only like 20 seconds long. Then we don’t know where to go from there.

So why do we get stuck in that spot?

You Don’t Know Song Structure

One reason is we don’t know song form. We don’t know the different structures for actually finishing a composition. If you study music, there are many formats, but one of the most common is AABA.

This involves repetition, so don’t be afraid to repeat your ideas.

You take an idea (A), repeat it (A), introduce something different (B), and then return to the original idea (A). Of course, you’re not repeating it exactly. You’re adding variation.

Taking an idea, repeating it, and adding variation within a structure is one of the best ways to actually finish your music.

You’re Overdeveloping Too Early

Another issue is over obsessing with making things perfect from the beginning.

You take an idea and fully develop it with sounds, stacks, layers, counter melodies, effects, everything. But you’re doing that with four bars of music.

At that point, there’s nowhere to go.

Instead of fully developing a small idea right away, try creating a full stretch of music first. Build out the structure, sketch the piece, and then go back and fill in the details.

Add the effects later. Add the layers later.

Don’t try to do everything at once.

Because one, you’ll run out of ideas, and two, you’ll burn yourself out.

Your Setup Might Be Slowing You Down

Another issue that I personally deal with, and I know others do too, is technical limitations.

The kind of music I create requires a lot of CPU and RAM. If your computer isn’t strong enough, you end up freezing tracks, unfreezing, bouncing in place, and constantly working around limitations.

That process gets draining.

It slows everything down, and over time, you lose your creative energy just dealing with technical issues.

So yes, the gear you have matters. Having a system that can actually handle your workflow makes a huge difference in your ability to finish music.

Bringing It All Together

At the end of the day, it’s very easy to start a piece.

But bringing it from start to completion is a completely different challenge.

So if you’re struggling to finish your music, focus on this

Learn basic song structure
Don’t fully develop ideas too early, sketch first, then refine
Make sure your setup isn’t holding you back

It’s not about having more ideas.

It’s about knowing how to turn those ideas into finished pieces.
